Christ the Redeemer is located within the Tijuca National Park and is surrounded by one of the largest urban forests in the world, the Tijuca Forest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
With many waterfalls, varied trails, more than 1,600 species of plants, 350 different species of animals and 3,953 hectares of Atlantic Forest, what makes this forest truly unique is that it was planted by man.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
In 1861, D. Pedro II, the 2nd Emperor of Brazil, cleared inappropriate landscaping and began reforestation work. Over a period of 13 years, approximately 100,000 trees were replanted. In addition to reforestation, in the following years the forest underwent various landscaping and revitalisation projects, with projects and works by great artists such as Auguste Glaziou and Roberto Burle Marx, among others.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The park has over 200 kilometers of trails, the most famous being the Pedra Bonita, Pedra da G\u00e1vea, Parque Lage x Corcovado, dos Estudantes, Transcarioca, etc. trails. With so many trails, waterfalls and natural showers, there are many different activities that can be practiced in the Tijuca National Park, such as rock climbing, rappelling, cycling, running, hiking, bird watching, waterfall bathing, hang gliding, jeep tours, picnics, and even volunteer work (www.icmbio.gov.br\/portal\/sejaumvoluntario) for trail maintenance, cleaning, managing invasive species, planting native seedlings, among other activities. Not to mention, of course, the Corcovado Train ride, a visit to Christ the Redeemer, and visits to several viewpoints, among the most famous, Paineiras, Vista Chinesa and Dona Marta.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Much visited by locals and tourists, it is estimated that Tijuca National Park receives more than 3 million visitors per year. The main entrance is located at Pra\u00e7a Afonso Vizeu, Alto da Boa Vista. However, access to the park can be made from different points in the city, depending on where you are going to visit within the park. Although it is very well signposted, many areas are completely isolated and surrounded by Atlantic Forest. We recommend that you visit the park with someone who knows its trails and access points well, or use specialized guides and agencies, to avoid inconveniences or accidents.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
